Where your dog can and cannot go

Sarasota County's animal code makes it a violation to take an animal onto any public beach, park, playground or school grounds in the county unless the county board has designated the area for animals. Dogs trained to assist a person with a disability are the exception (Sarasota County Code, Chapter 14, Sec. 14-48). The county's park rules put it in one line: dogs are allowed in designated parks and areas, and service dogs are welcome.

Service animals are not pets under Florida law

Florida's service animal law, Florida Statutes section 413.08, covers hotels and other lodging places. A service animal is a dog or miniature horse trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. A host may not charge a deposit or surcharge for one, even if pets pay one, and may ask only whether the animal is required because of a disability and what work or tasks it has been trained to perform. The statute says emotional support and companionship do not count as work or tasks. The handler still pays for damage if the host charges other guests for damage caused by pets.

Frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed on Siesta Key Beach?

Not on Siesta Beach or other public beaches in Sarasota County. County code Sec. 14-48 keeps animals off public beaches unless the county designates an area, with an exception for service dogs. Siesta Key Beach Access 1 on N. Shell Road is listed as dog-friendly on a leash, but it was temporarily closed for hurricane damage on October 22, 2026.

Where is the dog beach in Sarasota?

Brohard Paw Park at 1850 S. Harbor Drive in Venice. Sarasota County lists it as the beach area with off-leash access for dogs, next to a fenced dog park. It is owned by the City of Venice and open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

How much does a pet-friendly vacation rental in Sarasota cost?

On srq.rentals on October 22, 2026, the lowest listed nightly rates were $176 for a 2-bedroom Siesta Key cottage and $230 for Zarazota, a 3-bedroom pool home in Sarasota. A week at Zarazota totals $1,906 and 28 nights $6,997, including cleaning and 13% tax, before any pet fee.

Can a host charge a pet fee for a service dog?
